Because the first edition of this book was published a month or two before Hurricane Katrina, Letters From New Orleans is now something else, something it was not really meant to be. Now it’s a time capsule, a portrait of the city at a particular time, from one person’s perspective. Many things in the book read differently after Katrina than they did before. And when the time came for a second edition we decided that, for better or worse, none of those things should be changed or adjusted or tweaked with the benefit of hindsight. We added a new introduction, and a brief afterword, but otherwise left the letters as they were written when they were written.
